419 Scam – The penpal scam / Senegal sweetheart scam

The following scam format is a new twist on the classic advance fee fraud from West Africa. This scam starts off by a young female looking for a friend or pen pal. She supposedly lives in a refugee camp in Dakar, Senegal, helped by a pastor or reverend, whose email address and phone number are provided. Later she will mention that her father died leaving millions of dollars deposited with a security company and will provide contact details for a "lawyer" who will handle the inheritance claim, which the victim is supposed to make on behalf of the girl as her foreign partner.

The catch is that the lawyer and the bank/security company want your money (fees of thousands of dollars to be paid upfront) and the inheritance doesn't exist. All parties may be played by one or two persons. The only purpose of the "reverend" is to make it plausible why you phone a guy when you want to talk to the girl (who if she talks to you at all, is played by the scammer's girlfriend). Don't fall for the pretty pictures, the romantic language, the rose at the end of the email () or the big figures in the bank statements: All names, addresses and other details are fake.

The examples we have received were all sent from West African countries such as Senegal, Mali, Côte d'Ivoire or Benin. If you receive examples, forward them to our scam reporting mailbox or copy and paste them into the Scam-O-Matic (Instant Online Scam Check) webform.

"almenda nathalie"
This French-speaking girl (?) claims to be a French citizen living in Canada who is looking for a friend for correspondence. The source of the spam is a provider in Benin, a former French colony that borders NIgeria and that is the source of many advance fee scams:
